This announcement was made jointly with [[Verra]], the largest issuer of credits on the global [[voluntary carbon market]]. Verra's carbon credits are measured in terms of VCU's (Verified Carbon Units), which is initiating the process of creating this new Verra brand, the "ABACUS" VCU.

ABACUS was developed by a working group including:
* Amazon Inc scientists;
* [[UC Berkeley]] carbon trading researchers;
* [[The Nature Conservancy]]
