Climate Leadership

Imran Khan's proven track record in reforestation and ambitious climate policy has earned him and Pakistan international recognition. As the governor of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province from 2014-2018, Khan oversaw the implementation of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's "billion tree tsunami" reforestation initiative ahead of schedule, and under budget.

For this achievement Khan and Pakistan were recognized by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature for having been the first of governments to have not only completed but surpassed its Bonn Challenge commitment.[1]

Upon becoming Pakistan's Prime Minister in 2018, Khan's climate policy built on this success with a nation-wide "ten billion tree tsunami" successor program, which was recognized by the United Nations Environment Programme as a "global leader" initiative on multiple occasions, most recently in March 2022.[2]
