400 years ago, the town of Dhaka was founded along the banks of the Buriganga River. For many centuries, the Buriganga was the chief provider of water for the people of Dhaka. In recent decades, pollution into the river has become so extreme that the River is now dead and fish can no longer live there.

Although pollution into the Buriganga River comes from many sources, the number one pollutant is toxic chemical dumping by the country's textile industry.
