On the Hartung Brothers Inc's website it explains their humble beginnings in forced child labor:

"The Hartungs were a family before they were a business, and the lessons taught in that family continue to shape how the business operates today. Galen and Lorna Hartung taught their children the values of hard work and honesty, and not just with words. Randy Hartung remembers learning the value of work when his parents presented him with a bill for his 6th grade school clothes. The Hartung children earned their way working Lorna’s Amway route, mowing neighbors’ lawns, working for local farmers, and sweeping floors at the Co-op." [1]

Biotech Experimentation

Corn

On their website one of their many services available to farmers is rooted in GMO corn experimentation and states "...Our seed research and development operations in Hawaii, enables us to offer end-to-end turn-key services, including: contract R&D service to customer genetics and protocols, foundation seed production, pilot hybrids, and hybrid production, processing, warehousing, and distribution."[2]

Cucumbers

"Hartung Brothers grows, sorts, grades, chills, and ships cucumbers for pickling processors of all sizes. Cucumbers are produced in the American Midwest and the Canadian province of Ontario, and are available to ship throughout the continental United States and Canada. Customers may source cucumbers on a long-term contracted basis and enjoy priority fulfillment, or purchase ad hoc as needed. Hartung Brothers also stores salt stock cucumbers when pre-brining is required."[3]

Syngenta Acquisition

In 2017 Hartung Brothers Inc. completed an acquisition of Syngenta Seeds Hawaii Operations.[4] Ed Attema, Syngenta head of Global Seed Operations, Production & Supply, stated, in regards to the acquisition of their land on Oahu and Kauai, “We are extremely pleased to have this agreement with Hartung Brothers for our Hawaii sites. The goal has been to have our employee talent base and facilities maintained and to contract work with the new owner, and that will be achieved.”[5]
