Holistic Management International
Founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1984 by Allan Savory, Jody Butterfield, and Don Sylvester of the USDA to "train as many (USDA) SCS employees as possible."[1] Until he fully retired in 1989, Sylvester coordinated government and university training through the center.
In 1992 it launched the Africa Centre for Holistic Management, based in Zimbabwe.[2][3] This became a regional office of HMI,[4] but separated in 2010.
Today, its international network of educators and "land stewards... use holistic management strategies to manage more than 30 million acres around the globe."[5]

Quivira Coalition
"In an effort to bring the community together in this time of transition, we are sponsoring a Holistic Management Rendezvous: A Community Caring for the Land on January 12-13, 2005 in Albuquerque. This gathering will be in conjunction with the Quivira Coalition Annual Conference on January 14-15, 2005."[6]
USDA
In 2001, the USDA-funded ATTRA published a report titled "HOLISTIC MANAGEMENT: A WHOLE-FARM DECISION MAKING FRAMEWORK" advocating for The Savory Method of intensive cattle grazing. For training and certification, the report directs people towards Holistic Management International.[7]
In 2005, HMI was selling the new book 'Stockmanship: A powerful tool for grazing lands management' by Steve Cote, which was funded by the USDA and the Butte Soil and Water Conservation District in Idaho. Cote graduated from HMI's Ranch and Range Manager Training Program.[8]
In 2009 HMI was awarded $639,301 from the USDA for its beginning farmers program.[9]
In 2012 HMI was awarded a $537,101 federal grant from USDA to train first-time women farmers in whole farm planning.[10][11][12]
In 2013 HMI was awarded a $60,400 federal grant from USDA Western SARE to train agricultural professionals in Holistic Management® Whole Farm/Ranch Planning.[13]
USAID
In 2005 HMI was awarded a substantial grant from U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for work in Africa.[2]
In 2008 HMI was awarded $329,750 from USAID's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance to address drought disaster issues in Zimbabwe.[14]
LANL
In 2008, HMI reported that:
"With a grant from the Blackstone Ranch Institute, HMI and the Los Alamos National Laboratory convened the Grasslands Carbon Working Group, an ad-hoc group of seventeen experts in the fields of soil carbon, science, farming, carbon trading, and policy development... Participants have agreed to continue this important effort as an ongoing working group. HMI will track the group’s research and policy recommendations, and assist with coordination."[15]
