Faulty city design can make hot weather and heat waves worse. The temperature of a given block is influenced by factors including the number of trees to the color of pavement. Where there are too many buildings and roads radiating heat and not enough trees and vegetation absorbing heat, it can be up to 10F hotter - creating the 'urban heat island effect.'[1]
