Savory Method
Ruuts is based on the Savory Method and its CEO/Founder repeats many of Allan Savory's myths re: grasslands, grazing herbivores, and controlled burning:
"Grasslands are places with not enough humidity for a forest to grow. If you don’t graze these lands, the grasses oxidise and eventually die. In many places, fire is used to remove the old plants, destroying life and emitting CO2 back into the atmosphere. Herbivores can help us avoid this."
- Many grasslands can and have been reforested[4][5].
- Planting trees helps landscapes retain water and reforestation can be successfully paired with ecological water management and harvesting even in more arid climates.[6]
- Grasses can and do survive without grazing herbivores (especially livestock);
- Controlled burning has many benefits, including carbon sequestration and wildlife prevention;
Another team member, Geert, claimed that "the carbon stock for grasslands is as large as that of forests."[7]
This is grossly inaccurate. On average, forests store 3-4x more carbon than grasslands in relative terms, and over 6x as much in absolute terms. This holds true for both soil organic carbon and aboveground biomass:
- Forests store more than 80% of aboveground and up to 70% of belowground terrestrial carbon, despite making up only 31% of land area.[8][9]. Grasslands
- Grasslands cover approximately 25% of the Earth’s land surface (approximately 3.4 billion ha) and contain roughly 12% of the terrestrial carbon stocks [10]
Accreditation
Verra
“Ruuts and CNG have joint forces in a programme called SARA.... The next step is to collect data from the participating farmers and SARA gets the rights for the credits in return for the payment. We’ve recently started the registration process with VERRA’s VCS carbon registry”[11]
Regenera 22
Regenera was co-hosted in September 2022 by Ruuts, the Savory Institute, and Escuela de Regeneraction. Ovis 21 and two of its hubs played a major supporting role.[12]
