We Mean Business Coalition
The We Mean Business Coalition (WMBC) is a group of seven nonprofit organizations seeking to "accelerate the inclusive transition to a global net-zero economy" by working with the world's "most influential businesses."[1] Its seven members are:
BSR / CDP / CERES / CLG Europe / Climate Group / The B Team / and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development
Cop-27 Events
The WMBC hosted 101 events at COP-27.[2] Sponsors included Bayer-Monsanto, Nestle, Facebook, Unilever, and Salesforce. The World Economic Forum and World Wildlife Fund were also two of many notable partners.[3]
Verra Scandal
In February 2023, the WMBC's Deputy Director of Nature-Based Solutions wrote an article for Reuters[4] minimizing the extent of greenwashing uncovered the previous month in the voluntary carbon market, specifically Verra's avoided deforestation credits.[5]
The article failed to disclose that Verra was not only founded by two of the WMBC's members (Climate Group and WBCSD), it is also a current member of The Natural Climate Solutions Alliance (NCSA), convened by the WBCSD and another Verra founder, the World Economic Forum.
Instead, the article promoted as "the good news" the work of another NCSA member - Sylvera - and the NCSA's upcoming "buyer's guide" as a way of ensuring "due diligence" in carbon credit purchases. Major polluters belonging to the NCSA include British Petroleum, Equinor, Nestle, Shell Oil, and Weyerhaeuser.
Previously, the WMBC funded the September 2022 publication of the NCSA's Voluntary Carbon Market Guide for C-suite Executives [6].
