The Alliance of Protectors
Climate Justice Network
The Alliance of Protectors is an inter-generational and cross-cultural network of environmental and climate justice community groups and grassroots organizers leading struggles to stop extractive industries and protect sacred sites, land, air, and water for the generations to come.[1]
Membership
The Alliance of Earth, Sky & Water Protectors include: the House of Tears Carvers of Lummi Nation, Sulkadub Strategies, the Natural History Museum, Sacred Trust, E3C, Arm in Arm, Catskill Mountainkeeper, Se’si’le Foundation, Tiny House Warriors, Nimiipuu Protecting the Environment, Earthball of Orcas Island and the New Old Time Chautauqua.[2]
The Totem Pole Journey
In 2011, six proposed coal export terminals spread across Cascadia would have collectively shipped 150 million tons of coal to Asia every year – a significant share of U.S. coal production (total U.S. coal production was 728 million tons in 2016). This included the Gateway Pacific terminal near Bellingham, WA, opposed by the Lummi Nation and its allies. Every export proposal was defeated.
The Totem Pole Journey grows out of this highly successful campaign, and continues to rally support for the Tsleil Waututh and Wet’suwet’en First Nations in British Columbia in their campaign against new fossil fuel pipelines.
“In 2020, we aligned with the Alliance of Earth, Sky & Water Protectors to protect Mother Earth, forever -- that is our oath,” says Freddie Lane, Road Manager for the totem pole journey. “The earth is burning up, there are 1,000-year floods happening, the largest ice-shelf in Antartica will be gone in the next decade... it is all of our fight!”[3]
