Founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1984 by Allan Savory, Jody Butterfield, and Don Sylvester of the USDA to "train as many (USDA) SCS employees as possible."[1] Until he fully retired in 1989, Sylvester coordinated government and university training through the center.

Today, its international network of educators and "land stewards... use holistic management strategies to manage more than 30 million acres around the globe."[2]
